Help / Getting started

Signing in

KeepChats never asks for the password to any chat platform. There is no field for it anywhere in the product, because we could not use one if you gave it to us. Your KeepChats account is its own thing.

Ways to sign in

You can use a passkey (the most secure and the least typing), a single sign-on provider, or an email address and password. Two-factor authentication is available on the email route and we recommend turning it on. Whichever you pick, it is your KeepChats account you are signing in to — not any other service.

Pairing the browser extension

The extension does not ask you to type a password into it. Open the side panel, choose Sign in, and it shows a short code. Approve that code in your browser where you are already signed in to KeepChats, and the extension is paired. This is the standard device-authorisation flow, and it means your credentials never pass through the extension at all.

Staying signed in

Sessions use a short-lived access token with a rotating refresh token, so a stolen token has a narrow window of use. On mobile, tokens are held in the device keychain, bound to that device, and readable only while the phone is unlocked. Signing out anywhere clears that device only.

Why does KeepChats never ask for my chat password?+
Because it does not need one. It works alongside the session you already have on that platform. Anything asking you for a platform password to provide this kind of feature should be treated with suspicion.
I lost my second factor.+
Use one of the recovery codes you were shown when you enabled it. If those are also gone, contact support from the email address on the account.
